There is a relatively new community of committed open energy modellers. Their website is here:

They have a mailing list and a wiki which has quite a lot of useful links, for example this list of useful power generation databases: https://wiki.openmod-initiative.org/wiki/Power_plant_portfolios
They could be a useful forum to ask for technical advice / data sources and potentially a source of new collaborators.
